Top cast in Rhosygilwen’s summer opera
An international cast of star singers will perform Puccini’s famous opera La Bohème at Rhosygilwen on 8 and 9 July.
Cardiff-based singer Sian Cameron leads the cast which includes well-known local baritone Gwyn Morris as Hill, Scottish tenor Seamus Begg as Rodolpho, Zita Syme as Mimi, Katrine Kirkman as Museta, American bass Ryan Ross as Marcello and James Southall of the Welsh National Opera. as conductor and pianist.
Rhosygilwen’s summer opera is one of the highlights of the season, with the venue commonly referred to as the Welsh Glyndebourne for its soft, bucolic setting in north Pembrokeshire amidst idyllic scenery.
It is therefore the perfect opportunity to picnic and enjoy the intermission with friends in the gardens adjoining the concert hall, Neuaddydderwen.
Dame Margaret Price once said that the hall had one of the best acoustics she had ever known.
Set in Paris in 1840, La Bohème contains some of opera’s most beloved music with back-to-back hits – Rodolfo’s famous aria “Che gelida manina” (Your little hand is frozen) – in which he introduces himself – followed by Mimì chiamano’s “Mi” Mimì’ (They call me Mimì), then their soaring love duet ‘O soave fanciulla’ (O pretty girl in the moonlight), which culminates in a lovely floating high note for the soprano.
